Halide

The mark that stays inside the picture.

Prove the work is yours, after it has already been taken.

Halide hides a signal inside your picture that survives being downloaded, recompressed and posted again somewhere else. There is nothing visible to crop off. When your art turns up on someone else's page, you can show who made it, and when.

Get started

A few minutes, and one key file that you keep.

Just checking a picture?

No key needed. Drop any image and Halide will say whether a registered creator marked it.

What this does, and what it does not

Halide alters your picture very slightly, in a way people cannot see, and records the resulting signature along with the date.

  • It does not stop anyone downloading your art.
  • It does not stop anyone reposting it.
  • It does not remove anything from anywhere.

What it gives you is evidence after the fact: a way to show a moderator, a platform or another creator that a picture came from you, and that you had it first.

Your key file cannot be replaced

Setup produces one small file. Everything rests on it: your identity in the registry, and the pattern hidden in every picture you mark.

  • It is never uploaded. It stays on your device.
There is no reset, no recovery, no support

Nobody can give you a new one. Not the person running this registry, not anyone else. The file is the only copy that will ever exist.

If you lose it, everything you have already marked becomes impossible to prove, and you cannot mark anything new under the same name.

If someone else gets it, they can claim your work as theirs.

Save it in at least two places, and not only on the computer you work on.

Where the mark holds, and where it breaks

The mark lives in the frequencies of the image rather than on top of it. That makes it sturdy against some things and helpless against others.

It survives uploading to JanitorAI, the site's own recompression, being saved by someone else, and being posted again.

It does not survive cropping, an upscaler, a pass back through an image generator, heavy filtering, or a photograph of a screen.

A result can only be wrong in one direction. A match is close to certain. Silence proves nothing: the picture may never have been marked, or it may have been altered too far.

What the registry keeps

Your pictures are never uploaded. Marking happens entirely in this browser. What reaches the registry is:

  • your watermark pattern, so other people can check a picture without holding your key;
  • a short fingerprint of each picture you mark, which cannot be turned back into the picture;
  • your JanitorAI handle and profile link, so a match can name you;
  • the date, and the fact that you accepted these terms.

The list of registered creators is not public. Anyone may ask about one picture; nobody can browse who is enrolled.

One risk you are accepting

The registry has to hold your pattern in order to answer on your behalf. If the registry is ever breached, someone could use those patterns to strip marks from pictures. Your key file and your existing records would be unaffected.

You can delete everything at any time from the Account tab, using your key file. Nothing is kept afterwards.

Who you are on JanitorAI

A match shows these to whoever looks up the picture, so they can confirm it is really you.

Without the @.

Save this file now

This is the only copy. It will not be shown again.

Claim your profile

Anyone can type a handle into a form. This line is what proves the handle is actually yours.

halide:—

Paste it anywhere in the bio of your JanitorAI profile. It can sit at the very bottom; nobody needs to notice it.

Do this before you publish marked art

Until the line is on your profile, a match will name you but a careful moderator has no way to confirm it is really you. Someone else could have entered your handle.

Your line is tied to your key, so nobody else can generate it, and nobody else can put it on your profile page.

Mark a picture

Use the file at the size you publish it, before any upload. PNG keeps the most quality.

This must appear in your JanitorAI bio, so anyone checking a match can confirm the profile is yours.

Delete everything

Removes your entry, your pattern and every picture fingerprint from the registry. Pictures you already marked keep their mark, but nobody will be able to look them up. This cannot be undone.
